Something Big: Finishing Touches

After last week’s plunge into technical systems, I was glad to be able to focus on the content half of the scene. So glad, in fact, that I forgot to take screenshots of the progression! Oops… oh well. So, without any progression, here is what a grassy, blank-looking thing from last week turns into after lightmaps, detail sculpting, texture painting, trees, houses, bridges, and fog are added:

I still have a bunch of detailing work to do with grass and bushes and background terrain, but even without them this plays really well. I feel like I’ve actually made something now.

Also, something fun to do is to see how close the concepts are to the end-ish result (look at the house placements)

So yea, that’s that. Click the first image to play the demo right in chrome or firefox or whatever you’re using, and let me know what you think! Could you see yourself playing in a world like this on your phone and/or tablet?

Note: You can plant in the dirt patches by the house with fireworks going off :-)

    So yeah. I think this looks pretty great. The terrain seems to get cut short a bit in some places, especially regarding the house along the shore and houses on the edges of hills.

    I know you’re not onto this yet, but as far s UI, I would definitely recommend a compass. I think a minimap is unnecessary, but you need some kind of navigation aid (the hills on the periphery of town can look the same on one end as on the other, if you’re not paying close attention).

    Anyways, keep it up!

      Heya! I’m not quite sure what you mean with “cut short”, but you probably mean the weird jagged cuts in the terrain on steep edges. Yea, that’s going to be fixed next with a new terrain –> mesh conversion method that I’m going to try out. I’ve got to do that next before I detail the terrain, otherwise it will just mean more re-jiggering when I try to fit all of the decorations to a new, slightly different topology.

      Compass: Shouldn’t be hard when I’m at that point :-)
